Lately, I've been spending a lot more time creating (sewing, sketchbooking, painting, etc). One of the project that is currently on my sewing table is a set of velvet undies. I know, velvet! You can roll over and die now! Velvet undies, people! When it comes to bras, I've kept my fabric choices to white, black, or beige because this is the color that trims are most readily available. Something about Fourth of July weekend and the feeling of independence made me take the leap into dyeing so that my fabric choices for my me-made bras and undies could be unlimited.
I don't know what I was afraid of - it was so easy! With the help of a blogging/ sewing friend who emailed me tips, I dyed white elastic navy blue so it would match my fabric. I dissolved not even a spoonful of RIT dye in a small amount of water (that stuff is powerful!) and then I added it to the dye bath. The elastic was added last. The elastic sat in a simmering pot for about 30 minutes and after, I ran it under warm water and worked my way up to cool water and until the water was clear. I then hand washed it with mild detergent. I didn't use vinegar, salt, or a fixative, which is used to make the dye stick as well as promote even dying, one because elastic is so small and two, because when I was stirring the pot while the elastic was taking the dye, it seemed like the it was sucking up the color and didn't need any help. It was a lot of steps but again, easy. Can't wait to sew these up and show them off!
