Ombre Americana Shorts

I had an old pair of jeans laying around that I wasn't a fan of. I've seen a lot of shorts with an assymetrical hemline so I wanted to try it out. I basically cut the shorts at an angle from the side and made it so the back was longer than the front. No sewing involved!

I bought a color discharge agent at Brooklyn General called thiox that is a softer chemical than bleach. What's awesome about thiox is that you can discharge color from things like wool and silk! It comes in powder format in a small jar.

There is also another chemical called soda ash that is needed to make the color. What you can do is to have baking soda and bake it in the oven at 400 degrees - tutorial can be seen here

Only thing you have left to gather is a large pot exclusively for dying/discharging and a gas stove (preferably portable one to take outside and separate from your kitchen) the color doesn't come off unless it is in boiling water. You only need a few table spoons of thiox and a table spoon of soda ash.

The amount of discharge can be controlled by the amount of thiox. You basically know when the color is at the maximum discharge when the chemical  emits the smell of ammonia (ew I know) - If you aren't satisfied with the color and want it to look lighter, then just add another table spoon. The water must be boiling at all times during the discharge.

The process is a bit time consuming and tedius but it's worth it if you have a batch of clothes and a few friends over!
